The other day I was at
our local tavern in Margaret River. Since it was a Saturday night, there were a
lot of people there, which was a nice thing. The band that was playing was a
pretty decent one (can’t remember the name though). They did play few decent
cover songs from classic rock bands and they had couple of descent girls in
there band, that’s always a plus
.
Then I met few random
people through my house mate, who is a surfer as well but that’s not what he
does for living. For the next 20 mins all they spoke was about surfing. How awesome
the waves were and how the barrels were blah blah and fuckin blah and then they
went there ways. Funnily enough same thing happened with another guy as we met
him and all they said were; “How’s it going, how great the surf was today…. Blah
blah blah……”
I can understand the
attraction for surfing and I think it is pretty cool, but I don’t surf at all
coz I am a terrible swimmer. But even if I was a great swimmer and enjoyed
surfing I refuse to be the part of the demography who takes surfing more seriously
than anything in their life. I refuse to be like surfers who bullshit about how
they feel one with the ocean and how they can feel the energy and the vibe of the
ocean and become one with it; that is what you very commonly hear from stoners
(I don’t have any issues with people smoking weed).
I know people who would
call in sick or appear late for work because “The Surf’s Up”. That is just no
acceptable. Try looking for tradies to get some work done during surfing
season, you should consider yourself very lucky to get someone. When you ask
someone why the work has not been completed they will tell you, “The Surf’s Up
mate”. Which is obviously followed by, “Do you Surf?”
I cannot imagine myself
not showing up for work or arriving late for work because my favourite show was
on tv or I was having an online gaming session with my group around the world
or any other leisure activities that would take priority over my livelihood.
I won’t say all surfers
are douchebags, but majority of them are. I think people who take surfing as
the primary of life are definitely douchebags unlike who put surfing as
secondary or even tertiary part of life. Its Saturday night tonight and I am
going back to the tavern with my housemates for few nice beverages, let’s see
how it goes.
